Swimming
Competitions
for School
Children.
129. The Council decided, as an encouragement to children to
learn swimming, to arrange competitions and to
award a free pass to the second-class bath, available
during the following year, to the successful boy or
girl from each school attending the baths for instruction in
swimming, the passes to be available out of school hours and
before seven o'clock in the evening. The competitions were held
at the baths on the 23rd October, and were largely attended by
children and their parents. Sir William Lancaster, J.P., L.C.C.,
kindly presided. There are 62 schools in the Borough, 29 departments
send pupils to the baths for instruction in swimming, and of
these 26 entered for the competitions. The number of children
taking part in the competitions was 136—68 boys and 68 girls.
Proposed
Alterations at
the Wandsworth
Baths.
no. The subject of the use of the first-class swimming bath
during the winter season, which, when floored over,
has been used as a gymnasium, has been further
considered. The building has been let on several
occasions during the past winter for a poultry show and whist
drives, and for certain purposes appears to supply a want, where
the Town Hall would not be available or a less expensive hall is
required. Plans and estimates of the cost of the alterations which
would be required by the London County Council before a licence
would be granted, have been prepared and submitted to theCounty
Council for their approval.
Proposed Spray
Baths at
Wandsworth.
131. The subject of the practicability of providing spray baths
at the Wandsworth Baths, either by the adaptation
of some of the present slipper baths or otherwise,
has been further considered, and on the recommendation of the
Baths and Washhouses Committee it was decided, in view of the
diminution in the number of persons using the slipper baths, not
to nrooeed further with the scheme.
Lighting at
Tooting Baths.
132. A 2,500 candle-power lamp has been provided outside the
Tooting Baths in order to improve the lighting
there, at a cost of £23 10s. The lights in the men's
baths have been re-arranged, and the lighting of the spray
chambers improved.
