Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
161 inspections were made of factories, 1,054 of workshops,
'88 of domestic workshops, 370 of workplaces, and 196 of outworkers'
premises, while 348 premises were visited for enquiry
and no workroom found.
There were only four cases of overcrowding discovered, compared
with four in 1907, five in 1906, 12 in 1905, and 17 in 1904,
and these were at once abated. One was insufficiently ventilated,
and 25 were found to be in a dirty condition, compared with 13
and 66 in 1907.
In every workshop inspected there were separate water
closets for the sexes, but in 13 factories and 19 workshops the
water closets were defective.
Other nuisances were discovered in three factories, 27 workshops,
six domestic workshops, 26 workplaces, and eight outworkers'
premises, and these have all been abated.
It was only necessary to serve 111 intimation and two
statutory notices, and these were all complied with with the exception
of 11, five in Streatham, one in Tooting, and five in Wandsworth.
Two of these premises ceased to be workshops, and the
notices for the others were complied with in the beginning of the
current year. It was not necessary to take any proceedings
during the year.
38 workshops and five domestic workshops where females
were employed were reported to H.M. Inspector of Workshops,
and 32 were reported to this Council by H.M. Inspector.
Only five of the workshops reported by H.M. Inspector were
unknown to the Sanitary Inspectors. The other 27 had been
previously reported by me, or were already on the Register.
