143 Report,of the Medical Officer of Health.
charge was only a little over 30 million gallons in the 24
hours, a considerable diminution from the gaugings made
about the same place in the year 1851, which gave a discharge
of over 80 million gallons.
(5.) Special inspections were again made this year of several
localities in consequence of complaints of smells from sewer
ventilators.
These complaints were more numerous in 1908 than in
1907, chiefly on account of the increase in the number received
from Putney.
In all 143 complaints were received, six from Clapham
North, 10 from Clapham South, 33 from Putney, 24 from
Streatham, eight from Balham, 11 from Tooting, 24 from
Southfield, eight from Fairfield, and 19 from Springfield
Wards.
All these complaints were forwarded to the Borough
Engineer and Surveyor, who reported that in every case the
necessary cleansing and flushing or other work had been
carried out.
(6.) Numerous inspections were again made of several mews and
passages during the year, and it is satisfactory to be able to
report that several of these have been effectually dealt with,
while others will be completed during the early part of the
current year.
