Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
Voluntary Notification of Consumption.
During the year 85 cases of Consumption were notified bymedical
practitioners, seven from Clapham, six from Putney, seven
from Streatham, 10 from Tooting, and 55 from Wandsworth, compared
with 49 in 1907, 74 in 1906, 104 in 1905, 118 in 1904, and 88
in 1903.
Three of the cases were from five to 15 years of age, and 63
from 25 to 65 years.
Of the 85 cases notified, 10 were notified from the Workhouse,
15 from Brompton Hospital, two from St. Thomas's Hospital,
and two were notified on discharge from the Army.
In five of the cases no inquiries were made at the request of
the medical attendant, and in three of the cases notified from the
Brompton Hospital wrong addresses were given.
25 of the cases died, 12 were removed to the Infirmary, and
one left the Borough, leaving 29 still under observation.
At the close of 1907 there were still 11 cases under observation,
and during 1908 six of these removed to other places outside
the Borough, and one was removed to the Union Infirmary, leaving
four of these cases still under observation. Of these four, one
was notified in 1904, one in 1905, one in 1906, and one in 1907.
The total number at the close of 1908 on the Register under
observation is thus 33.
In all 97 visits were made during the year by the female
Sanitary Inspectors in connection with cases of Consumption.
In 18 of the cases visited for the first time during the year a
definite history of infection by a previous case in the family was
obtained.
The next Table shows the number of cases reported, exclusive
of those reported from external Institutions, from 1903 to 1908.
