Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
The preceding Table shows approximately the proportion of
deaths per 1,000 births for each week under one month, and for
each month to one year of age, from four groups of diseases.
Compared with 1907 the rate from common infectious diseases
is lower, this having been due to the decrease in the number of
deaths from Measles and Whooping Cough. From Diarrhœal
diseases the rate is higher, from Wasting diseases slightly lower,
from Tubercular diseases higher, and from other causes lower.
Compared with the rate for England and Wales for 1907, the
proportion of deaths under one year from infectious diseases is
lower, having been 6.16 in Wandsworth, compared with 8.67. The
proportion of deaths from Diarrhœal diseases was 20.72 in Wandsworth,
and in England and Wales 14.06.
From Wasting diseases the rate in this Borough was 38.92,.
compared with 43.18 in England and Wales for 1907.
From Tubercular diseases the rate in this Borough was 3.64,
compared with 2.75 in 1907, and with 4.54 in England and Wales
for 1907.
Compared with the rate in England and Wales for the five
years 1902-1906 the rate in this Borough was, from infectious
diseases 227 lower, from Diarrhœal diseases 4.37 lower, from
Wasting diseases 6.07 lower, from Tubercular diseases .90 lower,
and from other causes 18.60 lower.
The rate for 1908 thus compares most favourably with the
rate for England and Wales for the quinquennium 1902-1906.
It will also be seen from the preceding Table that the rate
from common infectious diseases was highest at 10-11 months,
from Diarrhœal diseases at two to three months and five to six
months, from Wasting diseases under one week, from Tubercular
diseases at 9-10 months, and from other causes at one to two and
two to three months.
From all causes the rate was highest under one week and
lowest at 11-12 months.
