Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
During the past year 905 samples of foods and drugs have
been submitted to the Public Analyst compared with 853 in 1905.
Of these, 84 or 9.2 per cent., were reported to be adulterated,
compared with 7.6 in 1905, and 11.33 in 1904.
The percentage of milk samples found to be adulterated was
io'26, as compared with 7.2 in 1905, and 15.3 in 1903. It would,
therefore, appear, judging by the results obtained, that the milk
supply of the Borough has somewhat deteriorated; if, however,
the tabulated results arrived at by the Public Analyst be carefully
examined it will be noticed that in many cases the adulteration is
extremely small, so much so indeed that in 20 cases of adulterated
milk samples which were reported to the Public Health Committee
on account of this it was decided that no action should be taken
against the vendor.
In 59 cases out of the 84 adulterated samples detected, proceedings
were instituted against the vendors.
The total amount received in penalties under the above Acts
during the year amounted to £100 18s. 6d., and the costs recovered
£39 13s. 6d., making a grand total of £140 12s., compared
with £123 16s. 6d. in 1905.
