Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
The Tables which follow summarise the work done during the
year by the female Sanitary Inspectors.
The total number of premises inspected was 1,971 (398 in
Clapham, 235 in Putney, 663 in Streatham, 149 in Tooting, and
528 in Wandsworth).
151 inspections were made of factories, 1,125 workshops,
78 of domestic workshops, 472 of workplaces, and 145 of outworkers'
premises, while 378 premises were visited for enquiry
and no workroom found.
There were only five cases of overcrowding discovered, compared
with 12 in 1905, and 17 in 1904, and these were at once
abated. Six were insufficiently ventilated, and 63 were found to
be in a dirty condition.
In one workshop there was no separate water closets for the
sexes, while in nine factories and 11 workshops the water closets
were defective.
Other nuisances were discovered in two factories, 33 workshops,
two domestic workshops, 20 workplaces, and nine outworkers'
premises, and these have all been abated.
It was only necessary to serve 121 intimation and nine statutory
notices, while for the first time since the female Sanitary
inspectors were appointed it was necessary to take proceedings
for sanitary defects against the owner of premises occupied as a
laundry.
55 workshops and 10 domestic workshops where females
were employed were reported to H.M. Inspector of Workshops
and 58 were reported by H.M. Inspector to this Council.
