Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
Inspector reported that the door of the boiling room was open
and the offensive effluvia escaping, causing a nuisance in the
neighbouring streets. No other complaint was received in regard
to these works during the rest of the summer.
In all 177 inspections were made during the year of the
premises where these offensive trades were carried on, five notices
were served, and in one proceedings were taken.
Ice Cream Premises.
At the end of 1905 there were 223 of these on the Register.
During 1906, 32 were added and 26 removed, leaving a total of 229
on the Register.
368 inspections were made during the year and 33 notices
were served, all of which were for cleansing.
Houses let in Lodgings.
At the end of 1905 there were 218 of these on the Register.
None were added during the year. 438 inspections were made of
these premises. 10 notices were served for overcrowding and 406
for other conditions, chiefly cleansing. With regard to 14
premises summonses were issued.
In four of the cases a fine of £3 with 6s. costs was inflicted,
in seven a fine of £1 15s. and 14s. costs, and in three the costs
(6s.) were paid, but no penalty was inflicted.
On the whole the new By-laws have proved satisfactory,
although some owners still fail to realise that the necessary cleansing
must be carried out at the specified time.
Offensive Trade Refuse.
The arrangement entered into by the Council for the removal
of the above by a contractor still continues to work satisfactorily.
The only alteration made in the contract this year was that the
minimum charge should be 2s. instead of is. as at present.
