Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
The number of intimation notices served was 7,500, compared
with 7,207 in 1905, and of statutory notices 1,044, compared
with 1,099 in 1905.
The greatest number of preliminary notices was served in
the Balham and Fairfield Wards, and the smallest in Southfield
and Streatham Wards.
The greatest number of statutory notices was served in
Balham and Springfield Wards, and the smallest number in
Putney and Streatham Wards.
With regard to Putney, although 31 statutory notices were
served only five were complied with, and this is due to the statutory
notices which were served on the owners of The Piatt, which
are at present in the Solicitor's hands.
With regard to the number in Southfield Ward not complied
with, 20 of these were with respect to property in Point Pleasant,
the work at which is now in hand. Of the 117 statutory notices
not complied with, the majority are in hand and have been complied
with in the early months of the current year.
The number of statutory notices served include by-law notices,
296 of which were served in respect of the following contraventions
of the by-laws : yard paving 88, cleansing house and other
contraventions of by-laws as to houses let in lodgings 70, repairs
to water closets 59, repairs to flushing apparatus of water closets
32, covers to cisterns 29, cleansing cisterns 16, paving and
ing stables one, and repairs to manure receptacle one.
The number of cases of overcrowding dealt with during the
year was 100, compared with 92 in 1905. Seven of these were in
Clapham, five in Putney, 11 in Streatham, 25 in Tooting, and 52
in Wandsworth. There has been a decided increase in the number
of cases dealt with in Tooting compared with previous years, due
to the poverty of the people residing in one or two streets in that
sub-district. In Wandsworth the overcrowding was chiefly confined
to the Fairfield and Springfield Wards. All these cases were
remedied after service of preliminary notice with the exception of
one in Clapham, where it was necessary to issue a summons.
