95, or 5.8 per cent. were fed on cows' milk only, but 26 had
in addition other food, raising the percentage to 7.4.
31 had condensed milk only, and 13 had condensed milk and
food, a total of 44, or 2.7 per cent., while nine infants were fed
on farinaceous food only.
With reference to the cases re-visited it was found that out
of the total of 858, 555 or 64.1 per cent. were still breast fed only.
The number of deaths among the infants visited by the
Inspectors was 63, and of these only 29 died from Diarrhoea or
Enteritis.
There is no doubt that the work has been most beneficial,
but it is impossible, with the present staff, to extend it to the
other Wards in the Borough.
Some voluntary help was obtained towards the end of the
year, and this partly accounts for the increase in the number of
infants visited. This help was found to be most useful, and if
possible, some additional help will be obtained in the current year.
The following Table shows the death-rate from Zymotic
diseases for the Borough for the year as well as for the three
previous years.
