Report of the Medical Officer of Health.
The death-rate for the Borough was .07 under the decennial
average. All the sub-districts show a decrease, with the exception
of Tooting, which is the same as such average.
The Chart shows the number of cases notified during each
week of the year.
The maximum number of cases was notified in the second
week of February, when 24 cases occurred, and there was another
maximum in the first week of November.
The increase in February was general all over the district,
but in the end of the year, during the months of October, November
and December, while the disease was more prevalent, it was
most so in Balham, Tooting and Wandsworth.
The smallest number of notifications was received in the first
two weeks of September, when only four cases occurred, two in
each week.
Only one special outbreak occurred during the year, viz.:—
in Brandlehow Road School; but in one Institution in the
Borough, viz.:—the Hambro Orphanage, Roehampton, considerable
difficulty was experienced in getting the disease eradicated.
Only seven cases were notified, but the cases occurred at
irregular intervals, pointing, in my opinion, to the fact that unrecognised
cases existed. The first case was notified on the 5th
February, followed by another on the 27th March, then other
cases occurred on the 29th March, 11th and 25th April, 4th May,
and 12th June.
On the 23rd May, 23 swabs were taken, but no Klebs
Loeffler bacilli were found. In 14 Hoffman's pseudo Diphtheria
bacilli were found to be present, while in 11 a negative result was
obtained.
On the 1st June, 14 swabs were taken, and in one the Klebs
Loeffler bacillus was found, in seven the Hoffman's bacillus, and
in six there was no result.
On the nth June, 11 swabs were taken, and in one both the
Klebs Loeffler and the Hoffman's bacilli were found, in three the
Hoffman's bacillus was found, and in seven the result was
negative.
