REPORT
Of the Medical Officer of Health
FOR THE YEAR 1906.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors of the
Metropolitan Borough of Wandsworth.
Sir and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to present the Annual Report of the health
and sanitary condition of the Borough for the year 1906.
Population.
The population of the Borough has not been estimated by the
method advised by the Registrar General as, in consequence of the
rapid growth of the Borough, such method would, in my opinion,
give fallacious results. The population has been estimated in a
similar manner to that adopted in 1905, by dividing the number
of inhabitants at the Census of 1901 by the number of rated hereditaments
in that year, thus obtaining a factor representing the
number of persons per hereditament, by which the number of
hereditaments in the middle of 1906 is multiplied.
The factor thus obtained does not vary very much from year
to year, and, consequently, the estimated population is nearer the
truth than the population estimated by any other available method.
Table I. shows the population of each Ward and the number
of hereditaments in 1901, and the number of hereditaments in the
middle of 1906 and the estimated population.
