General Report on Testings of Gas supplied to the Wandsworth
Borough Council (1) by the Wandsworth and
Putney Gas Company; (2) by the Mitcham and Wimbledon
Gas Company, for the year ended 31ST March, 1907.
Another year has elapsed since my general report on the daily
testings of gas supplied by this Company from
October, 1903, to March, 1906, and it may therefore
be of interest to review the results of the continued
daily testings to March, 1907.
W an d s worth
and Putney
Gas Company.
The standard illuminating power of the gas supplied by this
Company is 14 candles. The average illuminating
power for the twelve months ended March 31st,
1907, is 14.7 candles; the gas has mainly fluctuated between 14.5
and 15.0 candles, as will be clearly seen from the curve which 1
have constructed from the daily testings (Table 3). Thus, while
the illuminating power was somewhat more uniform than in the
corresponding periods 1904-05 and 1905-06, the general average
is somewhat lower than during those two periods, which showed
an average of 15.2 and 15.5 respectively. Table 1 shows the
monthly averages of the illuminating power for 1906-07, calculated
from daily testings.
Illuminating
Power.
On four occasions during this period I found the gas below
the standard illuminating power, viz. :—13.6 candles on October
20th, 1906, and 12.8, 13.6 and 13.9 candles respectively on
January 23rd and 24th and March 19th, 1907.
Previous to July, 1906, the sulphur impurities other than sulphuretted
hydrogen were not allowed to exceed
20 grains in 100 cubic feet of gas, but all
tions as to these sulphur impurities were abolished by the
Removal of Sulphur Restrictions Act, July 20th, 1906, and forfeitures
had already been temporarily suspended for some months
previously by the Council at the request of the Company. By
this Act, however, by special arrangement with the Company,
testing for sulphur impurities other than sulphuretted hydrogen
has been continued. Notwithstanding the abolition of forfeitures
Sulphur.
