I79. The Baths and Washhouses Committee considered the
subject of providing a washhouse for the use of the
inhabitants of the immediate neighborhood on the
site in White's Square, Clapham, which was purchased by the
Council with the view of providing baths. It was found that the
scheme could not be carried out for less than £1,000 for the
building and necessary machinery for washing and drying, and
the Council decided not to proceed with it.

180. The provision of baths at Clapham which the Council
had under consideration when the last annual report
was published has received further consideration.
An Inquiry was held by the Local Government Board into the
Council's application for sanction to a loan of £5,000 to defray
the cost of erecting and fitting up the baths. Tenders were invited
in alternative form for carrying out the work; 41 tenders
were received for the building and 19 for the engineering work.
Upon the tenders being considered by the Council it was decided,
as the cost of the designs as shewn by the tenders was so greatly
in excess of the approved estimates, not to proceed further with
them.
