Infantile Mentality.
The total number of deaths of infants under one year of age was
818, compared with 851 in 1904, 743 in 1903, and 809 in 1902.
Of these 160 occurred in Clapham, 58 in Putney, 175 in
Streatham, 132 in Tooting, and 293 in Wandsworth.
The infantile mortality was 118 per 1,000 births, compared with
123 in 1904, no in 1903, an 126 in 1902.
The following Table shows the number of deaths in each subdistrict,
the percentage to total deaths, the rate per 1,000 births for the
year 1905, and the three previous years, as well as the total deaths for
the whole Borough:—

The mortality was lower in all the sub-districts during the year
compared with 1904, with the exception of Wandsworth, in which
sub-district there was an increase of 10 per 1,000 births.
The infantile mortality in London for the year was 128, in
England and Wales, 128, in the 76 great towns 140, in the 141
smaller towns 132, and in rural England and Wales 113.
The rate for the year, viz.:—118 per 1,000 births, is lower than
in the previous year and is also lower than the decennial average,
