Tramway
Schemes.
The Highways Committee of the County
Council having under consideration the
question of what new tramways the Council
should be advised to obtain powers to construct, asked
for the suggestions of the late Wandsworth District
Board with regard to the construction of tramways
within the District. The Board informed them in
reply that subject to all terms and conditions upon
which it was proposed that any tramways should be
constructed in the District being approved by the
Board, the construction of the following tramways
might be undertaken with advantage;
1. From the Tooting tramway terminus to
High Street, Wandsworth.
2. From the Tooting tramway terminus to
Figg's Marsh.
3. Along the extension of York Road, Red
Lion Street, Buckhold Road, and Merton
Road to the boundary of the parish of
Wandsworth.
The County Council decided to apply for powers to
construct a tramway along the first mentioned route and
also along Tooting High Street from the present
terminus to the county boundary at Waterfall bridge,
and stated that they were prepared to undertake the
necessary widenings provided the Board agreed to give
their formal consent to the construction of the proposed
tramways, and undertook to contribute one-third of the
nett cost of the street widenings, estimated at £301,950.
The Council were informed that the Board were in
favour of the proposed tramways and were willing to
contribute one-third of the nettcost of the necessary
street widenings, but that they could not give their
formal consent to a Bill which they had not seen, and
that their successors would no doubt give their consent
if the provisions of the Bill were satisfactory to
