Ages at Death The proportion of the deaths at the various
age groups to the total deaths was as follows:—
Under 5 years 34.8 per cent.
From 5 to 65 years 39.6 ,,
Above 65 years 25.8 „
There were 169 deaths of infants under one year of
age, giving an infantile death-rate of 153 per thousand
living at that age. This is a much higher rate than has
occurred in Clapham for several years. The corresponding
rate for the whole of London was 167, and exceeded that
recorded in any year since 1871. This high death-rate in
the sub-district was not. due to any marked increase of
deaths of infants under one year, but was due to the small
number of births, this causing the number living at that
age to be less.
social Position. The proportion in the various social grades
was as follows:—
Nobility and Gentry 4.9 per cent.
Professional Classes 6.9 ,,
Middle and Trading Classes 28.2 ,,
Industrial and Labouring Classes 60.9 ,,
