EAST BATTERSEA.
An estimate of the population of this sub-district by
the official method employed by the Registrar-General,
gives 69,602 as the number of inhabitants calculated to
the middle day of the year 1886. This is an increase
of 2,948—one-tenth of the ascertained addition to its
numbers during the ten years, 1871-81.
That this assumed increase is not an excessive one
may be deduced from the fact that the natural increase
of population, being the excess of births over deaths
during 1886 was 1,394, leaving the probable increase by
immigration as 1,554. The above-stated natural increase
of population was equal to a rate of 20 per thousand,
being rather less than in 1885, when it was 21.2. The
subjoined table illustrates the relations of the birth and
death rates with the actual natural increase of population
during the last decade.
