It is gratifying to be able to give a favourable report of the
public health in this sub-district during the year 1884.
The birth-rate was a high one and points to a larger
population than the official estimate would account for. The
death-rate was below the death-rate of the healthiest rural
districts. There was no prevalent epidemic disease and the
death-rate from the seven principal diseases in this class was
very low.
This decrease in the prevalence of and fatality from
infectious diseases in an increasing neighbourhood, with a
larger migratory population than formerly is an indication of
good sanitary supervision and control, and the Board and
its Officers may be congratulated on the results of the care
and vigilance manifested in the prevention of the spread of
contagious diseases and on the improved sanitary condition
of dwelling houses whereby the moral, physical, and social
condition of the people is raised and a higher standard of
health-attained.
