STREATHAM,

BALHAM AND TOOTING.
The public health in this Sub-District was exceedingly
good during the year 1882, but the death-rate
was slightly above the extremely low death-rate of
the previous year. The rate of natural increase was
a high one; there was a diminution in the mortality of
infants under one year of age, and an increase in the
number of deaths of persons who died at an advanced
age.
There was, moreover, a marked decrease in the
prevalence and fatality of infectious diseases, especially
in those which more particularly claim the attention of
the Sanitarian, in consequence of their highly contagious
character and fatal tendency, as well as from the fact
that they are more within the scope of Sanitary measures
for their prevention and control.
The following statistics derived for the most part
from an analysis of the Registrar General's Returns,
afford satisfactory evidence of the truth of these
remarks.
