32
Births.—The births for the whole parish during 1872
were—Males 1,207, Females 1,142, total 2,349, being at
the rate of 42 per thousand per annum, and exceeding the
death rate of 20.6 per thousand by 21.4; the births being
more than double the deaths in number.
The natural rate of increase of population, 1,147, for the
year arises similarly from the births exceeding the deaths
by that number, the additional increase of population
which is estimated being made up by immigration.
Zymotic Diseases.—The following table of deaths from
Zymotic diseases for the year 1871 and 1872, will at once
make apparent the great difference between those years.
1872.
1871.
Small Pox - 10 - 264
Measles - 44 - 17
Scarlatina - 12 - 55
Diphtheria - 16 1
Croup - 13 - 7
Whooping Cough - 60 - 19
Fevers - 26 - 34
Erysipelas - 5 - 12
Dis. of Childbirth - 10 - 2
Carbuncle - 1 - 1
Diarrhœa - 64 - 173
Cholera - 2 - 0
263 485
Thus giving a difference of 222 cases in favour of the
year 1872, which number is more than made up by the
almost total "stamping out" of Small Pox by vaccination
and re-vaccination, 2.54 fewer deaths having taken place
than in 1871.
Measles and Whooping Cough alone exhibit any decided
increase in numbers in 1872; Scarlatina and Diarrhœa show
a very decided decrease; of the former disease 43, and of the
latter 109, fewer died than in 1871.
