COMPLAINTS OF FOREIGN BODIES IN FOOD
Foreign Body in Bread
A loaf of bread, purchased from a local bakers, was found to
contain a piece of fabric. The District Supervisor and representatives
of the bakery were interviewed and were of the opinion that the
material was part of an "improving cup" used in the manufacture of the
bread.
In this case the Committee authorised the issue of a warning
letter.
Dirtv Condition of Sliced Wrapped Bread
A complaint was made to the department concerning the dirty condition
of a loaf of bread. The retailer, from whom the bread was
purchased stated that it was baked and delivered to him daily by a
firm of bakers in an adjoining borough. On inspection the retailer's
shop was found to be clean and the bread in stock stored on a wire rack.
A warning letter was sent to the bakers of the bread.
Mouldy Cheese in Sandwich
A cheese sandwich, purchased from a local restaurant, was found to
contain a certain amount of mould on the cheese and the bread was dry.
The general condition of the premises was very good and cleanliness and
protection of food of a high standard.
A warning letter was sent to the firm.
Insect in Bread Roll
A bread roll containing an insect was brought to the department,
having been purchased in the borough. The bakery was informed of the
complaint and a letter was subsequently received from the firm's
Hygiene Department which apologised and suggested the insect had entered
through an opening in the premises, such as a door or window.
The Committee decided that a warning letter be sent to the firm.
Mouldy Condition of Luncheon Meat
Luncheon meat affected by mould was brought to the department.
The Manager of the self-service store from which the meat was purchased,
was interviewed and advised of the complaint. Examination of the
stock revealed a number of packages of luncheon meat showing signs of
mould due to a breakdown of the refrigerator, and the stockroom required
cleaning. On a further inspection being made it was found
that the premises had been cleaned and the affected meat burnt.
The Committee decided to send a warning letter to the firm.
Foreign matter in Loaf
Complaint was made to the department concerning a sliced loaf of
bread containing foreign matter.
