COMPLAINTS OF FOREIGN BODIES IN FOOD
Insect in Bread Roll
A roll, purchased from a local baker, was found to contain an
insect which was identified as a "Bread Horned Flour Beetle."
The Public Health Inspector visited the shop and ascertained that
the roll had been baked at a branch of the same firm in a neighbouring
borough. The owners of the bakery expressed regret at the complaint,
and stated that they had a regular contract with fumigation specialists
whereby regular visits and treatments were carried out at the bakery to
ensure that the premises were free from insect pests.
After consideration the Committee decided that a warning letter be
sent to the owners of the bakery.
Foreign Matter in Loaf
A loaf of bread, purchased in the borough, was found to contain a
portion of black "grease" or some other foreign matter.
The loaf was examined by the Public Analyst who stated that the
"foreign matter" contained starch, fat, sugar, some mould growth and
particles of dust or dirt (probably stale cake mix), but in his opinion
the bread was not unfit for human consumption.
