SMOKE CONTROL ORDERS
Steady progress has been made during 1960 with the plan to cover the
borough by a series of ten Smoke Control Orders. When this scheme was
submitted to the Minister of Housing and Local Government in 1959, it was
proposed that the last Smoke Control Order would be made during 1963, and
would come into force on the 1st October, 1964. If the present rate of
progress can be maintained, however, it is probable that the Smoke Control
programme for the borough will be completed a year ahead of schedule.
The position at the end of 1960 was as follows:-
Area No.1 Order came into force on 1st January, 1959
Area No.2 „ „ „ „ „1st October, 1959
Area No.3„ „ „ „ „ 1st May, 1960
Area No. 4„ „ „ „ „ 1st October, 1960
Area No.5 Order confirmed by Minister of Housing and Local
Government coming into force 1st October, 1961
Area No.6 Order made by Council coming into force 1st
October, 1961 (This has now been confirmed)
Area No. 10 Order made by Council coming into force 1st
September, 1961 (This has now been confirmed)
The position of these areas is shown in the accompanying map. No.10
has been planned to coincide with an Order covering the adjoining properties
in Tottenham. These areas cover 588 acres, and include approximately
8,143 dwellings.
A gratifying feature of these Smoke Control Orders has been the cooperation
which has been received from householders and owners in the areas
concerned. There has also been the fullest assistance from the London
Electricity Board, North Thames Gas Board and National Coal Board, and
from the fuel distributive trade.
APPROVAL OF NEW FURNACES
Under Section 3 of the Clean Air Act, 1956, notice must be given of
the installation of new furnaces of a capacity greater than 55,000 B.T.U.'s
per hour. During the course of the year notice has been given of two such
installations, details of which are as follows
(a) Installation of a gas-fired baking oven with a rated output
of 200,000 B.T.U.'s per hour..
(b) Installation of an oil-fired central heating boiler with
automatic pressure jet burners, rated at 997,000 B.T.U.'s
per hour.
