Health Department Counter relating to various subjects. In addition,
posters were displayed in the department and on the Council notice
boards and leaflets were distributed throughout the Council's public
establishments. The posters and leaflets gave very useful and
helpful information on such matters as Infectious Diseases, Accidents
in the Home, Food Hygiene and Atmospheric Pollution.
Throughout the year, the investigation into Atmospheric Pollution
has continued and further details together with graphs and statistical
data can be found later in this Report. At the time of writing the
Clean Air Bill is having its passage through Parliament and is likely
to become law in the near future.
Health Education continued throughout the year by means of posters
and leaflets. In addition a further series of films shows took place
at monthly intervals. The shows included a full length feature film
and short films on food and other health matters. It is hoped to give
a further series of these shows in 1956.
196 samples of Food, Drugs and Other articles were taken under
the Food and Drugs Act, 1938, of which 93 were formal samples and 103
were informal samples. None of these samples was adulterated.
9 complaints of foreign bodies in food were received in the
department and particulars of these are to be found in the food section
of the report.
A few old persons have been visited by the sanitary Inspectors
during the year, but in no case was it necessary to resort to section
47 of the National Assistance Act, 1948. One burial was carried out
under section 50 of this Act.
Dr.C.F. Stott, the Deputy Medical Officer of Health, has continued
to assist the department throughout the year.
My thanks and appreciation are extended to His Worship the Mayor
and to the chairman and Mambers of the Public health Committee for the
support they have given me during 1955.
I also thank the staff of the Public Health Department for their
assistance throughout the year.
