Metropolitan Borough of Stoke Newington
REPORT OF THE MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
FOR THE YEAR 1952
PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTMENT,
TOWN HALL,
STOKE NEWINGTON, N.16
TO THE MAYOR, ALDERMEN AND COUNCILLORS
OF THE METROPOLITAN BOROUGH OF STOKE NEWINGTON
This Annual Report is presented in the abridged form required
by the Ministry of Health.
For the first nine months of the year, the administration of the
Public Health Department was very ably carried out by my
predecessor, Dr. G. H. Dart. Dr. Dart held the appointment of
part-time Medical Officer of Health in Stoke Newington from the
5th July, 1948, until his retirement on the 30th September, 1952,
after a very distinguished career as Medical Officer of Health of
Hackney for a period of 32 years. Stoke Newington is greatly
indebted to Dr. Dart for his direction of the work of the Public
Health Department and his keen interest in all matters concerning
the health of the Borough during his period of office.
I returned to Stoke Newington to commence my duties as
part-time Medical Officer of Health on the 1st October, 1952.
The work of Sanitary Inspection has continued to be carried out
satisfactorily during the year. The number of sanitary complaints
received was slightly less than that of the previous year and the
number of inspections and re-inspections was correspondingly less.
In ten cases property owners found that they were unable to
meet the cost of repairs covered by Sanitary Notices, and in each
case, the Council effected the repairs and are in process of recovering
the amounts expended by way of collection of the rents.
