FOOD PREMISES.
121 food premises were registered and kept under observation
by the Inspectors. The Inspectors visited 1,021 food premises
during 1940.
FOOD AND DRUGS ACT 1938.
154 formal and 80 informal samples of food and drugs were
submitted for analysis. 5 samples of milk and one sausage roll
were reported as adulterated, all other samples as genuine
Warning letters were sent to the Vendors of two of the
adulterated samples and one dairyman was removed from the register
for repeated offences but was subsequently restored to the register
by order of the Court.

SMALLPOX AND VACCINATION.
No case of Smallpox was notified. Of the 203 births
registered in Stoke Newington during 1939, 71 or 35.0 were
successfully vaccinated. (Figures for 1940 not yet available).
TUBERCULOSIS.
There were notified k5 new cases of pulmonary and 4 new
cases of non-pulmonary tuberculosis. The death rate per 1000
of the population was 0.86 for pulmonary tuberculosis (35 deaths)
and 0.05 for non-pulmonary tuberculosis (2 deaths).
TOTAL NUMBER OF TUBERCULOUS PERSONS LIVING IN THE BOROUGH.
The known tuberculous population decreased from 250 to
206 during the year.

The total cost borne by the Council for providing Artificial
Pneurao-Thorax treatment to Stoke Newington patients was
£124.8.6. and £2.15.0. for Finsen Light treatment.
