POPULATION.
The 1921 census figure for the population of the borough was
52,167, that for the census of 1931 was 51,215.
The Registrar-General's estimate of population for the middle
of 1938 is 50,480, an increase of 230 persons as compared with
the mid-year estimate for the previous year.
The Registrar General's figure for estimated population has been
used in this report in calculating the birth and death rates.
BIRTHS.
The total number of births registered in the borough was 257
and of these 56 were transferred to other districts, as the permanent
addresses of the parents were outside this borough. Similarly
494 births occurring outside the borough, in maternity hospitals,
etc., were transferred to Stoke Newington, making a total of 695
belonging to this borough. Of these 348 were males and 347 were
females. This figure gives a birth rate of 13.8 per 1,000 of the
estimated population, as compared with 14.9 for the year 1937.
