POPULATION.
The 1921 census figure for the population of the borough was
52,167, that for the census of 1931 was 51,215.
The Registrar-General's estimate of population for the middle
of 1937 is 50,250, a decrease of 100 persons as compared with
the mid-year estimate for the previous year.
In my opinion the population for 1937 has been under-estimated,
as I believe that any loss of population due to migration from
the borough has been balanced by new residents coming from
other areas to take their places, and I would estimate the population
figure as being little changed from that of the 1931 census. As an
alternative estimate cannot be based on reliable factors the
Registrar-General's figure for estimated population has been used
in this report in calculating the birth and death rates.
BIRTHS.
The total number of births registered in the borough was 311
and of these 75 were transferred to other districts, as the permanent
addresses of the parents were outside this borough. Similarly
511 births occurring outside the borough, in maternity hospitals,
etc., were transferred to Stoke Newington, making a total of 747
belonging to this borough. Of these 403 were males and 3.14 were
females. This figure gives a birth rate of 14.9 per 1,000 of the
estimated population, as compared with 13.8 for the year 1936.

The following table shows the birth rates in Stoke Newington London, and England and Wales, for the last ten years
