POPULATION.
The 1921 census figure for the population of the borough was
52,167, that for the census of 1931 was 51,215.
The Registrar-General's estimate of population for the middle
of 1934 was 50,620, and that for 1935 is given as 50,210.
In my opinion the population for 1935 has been under
estimated as I believe that the loss of population due to migration
from the borough has been balanced by new residents coming from
other areas to take their places and I would estimate the population
figure as being little changed from that of the 1931 Census. As an
alternative estimate cannot be based on reliable factors the
Registrar-General's figure for estimated population has been used
in this report in calculating the birth and death rates.
BIRTHS.
The total number of births registered in the borough was 307,
and of these 74 were transferred to other districts, as the permanent
addresses of the parents were outside this borough. Similarly
467 births occurring outside the borough, in maternity hospitals,
etc., were transferred to Stoke Newington, making a total of 700
belonging to this borough. Of these 379 were males and 321 were
females. This figure gives a birth rate of 13.9 per 1,000 of the
estimated population, as compared with 13.1 for the year 1934.
