POPULATION.
The 1921 census figure for the population of the borough was
52,167, that for the census of 1931 was 51,215.
The Registrar-General's estimate of population for the middle
of 1933 was 51,120, and that for 1934 is given as 50,620.
In my opinion the population for 1934 has been under
estimated as I believe that the loss of population due to migration
from the borough has been balanced by new residents coming from
other areas to take their places and I would estimate the population
figure as being little changed from that of the 1931 Census. As an
alternative estimate cannot be based on reliable factors the
Registrar-General's figure for estimated population has been used
in this report in calculating the birth and death rates.
BIRTHS.
The total number of births registered in the borough was 405,
and of these 93 were transferred to other districts, as the permanent
addresses of the parents were outside this borough. Similarly
381 births occurring outside the borough, in maternity hospitals,
etc., were transferred to Stoke Newington, making a total of 693
belonging to this borough. Of these 354 were males and 339 were
females. This figure gives a birth rate of 13.7 per 1,000 of the
estimated population, as compared with 12.6 for the year 1933.
The following table shows the birth rates in Stoke Newington,
London, and England and Wales, for the last ten years :—
