688
Illegitimate births numbered 23 (12 males and 11 females)
being 3.2 per cent. of the total number of births.
Births in Institutions.—Local, 21; outlying, 174; total, 195.
Notification of Births.—In practice, notification, required
by the Acts of 1907 and 1915, is almost always performed by the
physician or midwife in attendance. Of the 645 living and stillbirths
notified, 247 were notified by physicians; 101 by midwives;
183 from maternity homes; 64 by parents; and 50 by other
persons, such as medical students. Eighty un-notified births
were registered (85 in 1926), and of these, 75 were doctors' cases,
and 5 midwives' cases.
During the latter nine months of the year, in all cases of default
a cautionary letter has been sent, and there has been, in general,
a gratifying response from those who were thus reminded. For of
the 80 cases for the year, 38 occurred during the first three months,
and only 42 during the latter nine months.
DEATHS.
The Registrar-General reports that 636 Stoke Newington
residents died in 1927. Of this number, 258 died in no less than
51 different Institutions outside the Borough, including the predominant
total of 136 at the Hackney Hospital (Infirmary).
The annual death-rate is thus 12.2 per 1,000 persons.
Table I shows the deaths classified according to age, sex, and
cause of death.
