During the year 1920 there were 1,223 births, viz.:—642 males and 581 females. The birth-rate per 1,000 per annum was therefore 23 1, as against 16'8 for the preceding year.

The illegitimate births numbered 41; 24 males and 17 females.
When a diminishing birth-rate is accompanied by a diminishing
death-rate, a fairly satisfactory annual natural increase in the
population (by excess of births over deaths), may still be maintained.
The excess of the birth-rate over the death-rate for the year
1920 was 10 7 per 1,000 ; as against 13 0 for England and Wales.
The Registrar.General now provides particulars of any births
which occur outside of the district to which the parents belong,
and which are not therefore locally registered. So that now
such extra births figure in the returns of the total births allotted to
the Borough. It was impossible in earlier years to make this
addition, and so the birth.rates for the past few years must not be
taken as strictly comparable with those of former years.
During the year the births notified under the Notification of
Births Act have been compared with the births registered by the
Registrar of Births, and the respective figures are 1,122 and 1,223.
MORTALITY.
General Mortality.—There were 396 deaths of residents registered
in the Borough, and 263 of residents who died in Public
Institutions outside of the Borough, making a total of 659 deaths.
