Authority, to provide training and education for patients in new and old skills before
their return to work.
With the assistance of these community services it was possible to avoid the
need of long-term hospitalisation at Long Grove Hospital and to reduce the rate of relapse
in an area of above average prevalence of psychiatric disorder.
On 1st April 1965 St. Clement's Hospital accepted the statutory responsibility
for the eastern half of Tower Hamlets, i.e. the postal districts E.3, and E.14; and on 1st
November 1967 for the remainder For the first time a small psychiatric hospital or unit
has been given full statutory obligation and provided a comprehensive psychiatric service.
Further developments include the designation as a teaching hospital in April
1968 and the administrative transfer to the London Hospital, and the opening of a drug
addiction centre in February 1968. A new unit was built which currently houses a Day
Hospital and Treatment Centre for 100 heroin addicts '

Mental Health Week
An exhibition in one of the Council's Libraries to show the very considerable work done
by the mental health section towards the training and rehabilitation of the mentally ill and
sub-normal in this area, was held in connection with Mental Health Week from 9th-15th June. The
exhibition was staged by the health education and mental health sections of the department,
and during the week over 600 members of the genera] public were interested visitors. It is felt
that the personal attention they were given both at the exhibition and in the subsequent visits
to training centres and the open days, will have made a lasting impression of the efficiency
and adequacy of the service provided which, because of the method by which it was done, they
will pass on to an ever widening circle of the public.
A photograph showing part of the exhibition faces this page.
