Clinic and the building of a three surgery preventive dental clinic at Watney Street (to
replace Prunella Clinic), as mentioned last year but still awaiting achievement. The long
waiting lists for treatment at Bromley and Wellington Way make the provision of a second
surgery at each of these clinics highly desirable and the particular needs of patients in
the Wapping area must be met. The new building which is being carried out in the
Wapping area makes this a potentially more urgent problem as time passes.
Special Services
All the remarks and observations related to treatment of mentally and physically
handicapped children, orthodontic treatment and treatment for children in residential
homes made in the 1967 report still apply. It is hoped that a full orthodontic service
will materialize in the new surgery at Ida Samuel Clinic during 1969, whilst the dental
surgery at St. Leonards, Hornchurch is scheduled for re-equipment.
Liaison with the London Hospital
The unique relationship between the School Dental Department and the London Hospital
Dental Institute andDental School and Dental Health Study Unit continued during the year.
Groups of fifth year students have again been taken into the borough and have
experienced at first hand the needs and demands of the school population for dentistry
and how the school dental service fits into the community dental pattern of this area of
London. An unexpected but gratifying result of this liaison with the clinical students has
been the large increase in applications from newly qualified graduates for posts in this
Borough and in the Inner London Education Authority's area.''
