There have been 2 deaths (both unvaccinated children) in
Lambeth during 1896 from Smallpox, as compared with 2
(also unvaccinated children) during 1895, and an annual
average of 11 for the last 10 years (1886 to 1895). Sixteen
cases were notified during 1896, as compared with 51 during
1895, and an annual average of 36 for the six years 1890 to
1895. Of the 16 cases notified, 14 were removed to hospital
and 2 treated at their own homes (one being practically
convalescent before being notified, and the other a case of
chicken-pox, or exceedingly mild Smallpox in a vaccinated
child of 10 years).
The case mortality is, therefore, 12.5
per cent., as compared with 2.9 for London (304 cases
notified and 9 deaths).
