There is, however, cause for congratulation in the fact
that the Inner Districts have during 1896 participated in the
lowered mortality and lessened zymotic incidence of Lambeth
to as great an extent as the Outer Districts—a condition of
things to be desired, and expected with the more careful
sanitary supervision that the increased Inspectorial Staff
enables the Vestry to exercise.
The place that Lambeth takes amongst the Metropolitan
Sanitary Authorities is worthy of note there being only eleven
other Authorities (out of 43) with a less death-rate, and
nine with a less zymotic death-rate. (See Appendix Table.)
The 5098 corrected deaths may be further analysed and
tabulated according to age-periods, as follows:—
of the total deaths took )
1313, i.e., 25.8% place under 1 yr. of age.
732 „ 14.4 „ „ „ „ between 1 & 5 yrs.
2045 " 40. 1 „ „ " under 5 years.
290 " 5.7 " " " " between 5 & 20 yrs.
605 „ 11.9 „ „ „ „ „ 20 & 40 yrs.
930 „ 18.2 „ „ „ „ „ 40 & 60 yrs.
1016 „ 19.9 „ „ „ „ „ 60 & 80 yrs.
212 „ 4.2 „ „ „ „ over 80 years.
3053 " 59.9 " " " " 5 years.
These results must be compared with those for London,
given in Table E, which shews the estimated mortalities per
1,000 persons at each age-period for London during 1896,
and for the London averages for the 10 years 1881—90.
Tables F, G & H, shew the uncorrected returns (male
and female) for Lambeth, arranged as to Registration Subdistricts,
age-periods, and quarters respectively, for comparison
with similar tables in former Reports.
