1.—General Death-Rates.
The uncorrected death-rate for Lambeth is 19.7 per 1,000
inhabitants. This rate is, however, uncorrected, and, on analysing
the 5,374 total deaths registered, it is found that 1,975 represent
deaths occurring within the Borough amongst persons not
belonging thereto. These deaths are to be deducted, but, on the
other hand, there are 769 deaths registered outside the Borough of
persons belonging thereto, and these must be added, giving a net
corrected number of deaths of 4,168, and a net corrected death-rate
of 15.3 per 1,000 inhabitants, the slight increase being apparent
rather than real, due to the low estimated civil population. The
different districts are set out as usual in tabular form.
W hether the corrected or uncorrected death-rates for the
Borough be taken, they are again satisfactory for the year 1917
(the seventeenth year of the existence of the Borough).
The figures* (corrected) for 1917 are :—
(a) Inner Districts—17.7 per 1,000 population.
(b) Outer Districts—13.6 per 1,000 population.
(c) Whole Borough—15.3 per 1,000 population.
Age Periods of Corrected Deaths.
The 4,168 corrected deaths during 1917 may be further analysed,
and tabulated as follows :—
516, i.e., 12'4 per cent, of the total corrected deaths took
place under 1 year of age.
357, i.e., 8 5 per cent, between 1 and 5 years.
873, i.e., 20'9 per cent, under 5 years.
233, i.e., 5"6 per cent, between 5 and 20 years.
391, i.e., 9'4 per cent. 20 to 40 years.
878, i.e., 21" 1 per cent 40 to 60 years.
1,793, i.e., 43 0 per cent. 60 and over.
3,295, i.e , 791 per cent, over 5 years.
*N.B.—The rates are calculated upon the civil populations (estimated),,
and the deaths of all members of the armed forces are excluded.
