Notification of Births
The following table shows the births notified during the year compared with previous years. The number notified last year was the highest for six years and the percentage of hospital confinements was 80%, compared with 82.8% in 1957.

Ante-natal Clinics
Following the retirement of Dr. Esther Rickards, consultant obstetrician
in Tottenham, negotiations took place with the North East Metropolitan
Regional Hospital Board and the Tottenham and Edmonton Group
Hospital Management Committees, as a result of which links were established
with the North Middlesex Hospital and Bearsted Memorial Hospital
in respect of consultant cover. The staffing of the ante-natal clinics in
Tottenham will in future be taken over from the North East Metropolitan
Regional Hospital Board by four assistant medical officers with obstetrical
qualifications appointed as honorary clinical assistants at either the North
Middlesex or Bearsted Hospital for alternate weekly sessions.
The percentage of expectant mothers making at least one attendance
at one of the local authority ante-natal clinics was 65.7% during 1958
compared with 68.5% the previous year.
During the last quarter of the year, the number of sessions at The
Chestnuts and Lordship Lane clinics were reduced by one a week in each
case
