The Welfare Centre serving Stroud Green, Finsbury Park
and part of Harringay was opened in September, 1918, at
22, Wightman Road.
For some time past these premises have not proved to be
either suitable or adequate in size, and in March, 1940, the
Welfare Centre was transferred to more commodious premises
at Burgoyne Hall, Burgoyne Road, Harringay, these premises
having formerly been used as a church hall.
MATERNITY HOSPITAL ACCOMMODATION.
North Middlesex Hospital.—The maternity admissions
from Hornsey to the North Middlesex Hospital numbered 114
in 1940, as compared with 127 in 1939.
There is the closest co-operation between the Council's
Ante-natal Medical Officers and the obstetric surgeon in charge
of the Maternity Department of the Hospital.
City of London Maternity Hospital.—An arrangement was
entered into as from April 1st, 1937, for the payment of one
guinea for each Hornsey mother admitted. During 1940 the
number was 34, as compared with 74 in 1939.
EMERGENCY MATERNITY UNIT
(FLYING SQUAD).
The Maternity Department of North Middlesex Hospital has
undertaken to provide in cases of urgent necessity (at the request
of the doctor or midwife in attendance) a "flying squad"—that
is, an ambulance with doctors, nurses and equipment capable
of giving immediate treatment in the patient's own home.
It was not necessary to ask for the services of the "Flying
Squad " during the year.
MIDWIFERY SERVICES.
There were 25 Midwives, including 4 Borough Midwives,
notified to the Middlesex County Council as practising in the
Borough, 15 of whom reside outside the Borough.
The Borough Midwives attended 341 births, in addition to
ante-natal clinics held at the Welfare Centres. One of the
conditions upon which the Council's Midwives accept a case is
that the expectant mother shall attend an ante-natal clinic.
