improvement in the health of the children evacuated. Tn some
cases, the improvement has been striking.
Several factors have no doubt contributed to this result—

more regular hours in going to bed at night and the change
of diet.
Provision of Milk.

Changes in Staff.
Medical Staff.—Early in 1939 Dr. Marian Lones was
appointed whole-time Assistant Medical Officer of Health for
Maternity and Child Welfare and Assistant School Medical
Officer to replace the part-time officers, Dr. Muriel Radford
and Dr. J. S. Boden.
Dr. Jean Sutherland, Deputy Medical Officer of Health and
Assistant School Medical Officer since 1933, resigned hi

Borough. Early in 1940 part-time medical assistance to the
extent of six sessions per week has been approved by the Council.
Orthopaedic Staff.—At the end of the year Mr. H. J.
Seddon, Orthopaedic Surgeon, resigned on leaving his position as
Resident Medical Superintendent, Royal National Orthopaedic
Hospital, Stanmore, to take the Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery
in the University of Oxford.
In August, 1939, Mrs. Yorke, Orthopaedic Masseuse, was
transferred to another district and her place was taken by
Mrs. Gouran.
Dental Staff.—The pre-war dental staff consisted of one
whole-time dentist (Miss W. M. Hunt) and one half-time dentist
