cent, is deducted.
VOLUNTARY COMMITTEES.
The voluntary workers continue to do invaluable work, for
which I have no doubt they feel amply rewarded by the large
numbers of healthy infants and happy mothers whose acquaintance
they make at the Centres.
TODDLERS' PLAYROOM.
The Toddlers' Playroom, started in November, 1931, and
conducted at no expense to the Council by Miss Benn at the
Highgate Centre, continues to be a success. The Playroom is
open each morning from Monday to Friday and the maximum
attendance is 19. There are 27 between the ages of 2 and 5
on the rolls and the total attendances made during the year
was 3,870.
MATERNAL MORTALITY.
During the year under review much has been said and
written on "Maternal Mortality and Morbidity," i.e., the deaths
and disabilities of mothers resulting directly or indirectly from
childbirth. The subject has been freely discussed in medical
and lay papers and on public platforms. So far as I have
observed, no new truth has emerged. There is a constant
insistence, now becoming somewhat monotonous, that maternal
mortality is terribly and unnecessarily high, and shows no sign
of reduction.
Circular 1,433, dated October 10th, 1934, from the Ministry
of Health, addressed to Maternity and Child Welfare Authorities,
calls attention to Circular 1,167 of 11th November, 1930, and
the accompanying Memorandum 156/M.C.W. on the subject of
Maternal Mortality.
