School Hygiene.
A new Infants' School is in course of construction at Rokesly
Avenue. When this is opened Holy Innocents' School, which
has for some years been regarded as unfit, will be closed.
Plans have been passed by the Committee and approved by
the Board of Education for the reconstruction of Crouch End
School. This work will be undertaken when the building at
Rokesly Avenue is complete.*
These changes represent important advances in the hygienic
conditions of the elementary schools in the area, and it is particularly
gratifying to note that the reconstruction at Crouch
End School includes a suite of baths similar to those which have
been such a success at Campsbourne School. Every facility
provided for personal cleanliness is a definite contribution to the
public health.
Medical Inspection.
Four age groups of school children are inspected, namely,
infants, age 5; intermediates, age 8; the scholarship group,
age 11, and leavers, age 14. In addition, parents are informed
on the notice of medical inspection that pre-school children can
be examined if desired.
Findings of Medical Inspection.
The nature and number of defects found are given on
Table II. at the end of this Report.
There is an all-round improvement in the condition of the
elementary school population, especially in regard to cleanliness,
which reaches a high standard, also in regard to nutrition, skin
disease, dental decay, and diseases of heart and lungs.
There are signs also of improvement in posture and physique
as a result of the re-awakening of interest in physical education
throughout the schools.
Following Up and Treatment.
The arrangements for dealing with defects found have been
set out in previous reports. The Authority's scheme of treatment
is shown in the table on page 9:—
Note.—*Rokesly School will be officially opened by H. Ramsbotham,
Esq., O.B.E., M.C., M.P., Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education,
on May 12th, 1934.
