INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD.
The inspection of the milk supply, meat and other foods, and
of places where food is prepared, is part of the routine duty of
the Sanitary Inspectors, and goes on continuously throughout
the year. Disease produced by eating unsound or unwholesome
food is extremely rare. During the heat wave in June, 1933,
however, an outbreak of food poisoning occurred at Muswell Hill,
affecting over sixty persons and causing one death. There was
no difficulty in tracing the trouble to brisket of beef, prepared
and sold in a local cooked-meat shop. The remainder of the
infected material was at once surrendered and destroyed.
Scrupulous cleanliness of premises and personnel is essential
in all places where food is prepared and sold, and it is the
constant endeavour of the officers of the Health Department to
secure a high standard of hygiene in these places.
Dairies and Milksiiops.
Every dairyman or purveyor of milk must be registered with
the Sanitary Authority of the district in which his dairy premises
are situated: if he retails milk in the district of another Sanitary
Authority he must also be registered with that Authority.
At the end of the year the register showed 60 classed as
dairies and 62 classed as milkshops the principal trade of which
is not dairy produce.
Of these dairies, 23 are situated outside and operate also
inside the Borough.
The dairies and milkshops have been inspected periodically
and it is pleasing to record that a high standard of cleanliness
has been found to exist.
These inspections have been amplified by the taking of
24 informal samples for bacteriological examination during the
year.
There are no cowsheds in the Borough.
Special Designated Milks.
Producers of, and dealers in, special designated milk are
required to obtain licences annually.
