Twenty-eight women from Hornsey were admitted to the
maternity wards of the North Middlesex Hospital, at a total cost
of £150. Towards this sum the mothers themselves contributed
£97 0s. 6d.
During the year 815 babies were brought to the centres for
the first time, and 1,717 babies made 13,933 attendances at the
centres. At the ante-natal consultations 326 expectant mothers
were seen for the first time and 706 attended as 'old cases.'
Details of the work done in connection with maternity and
child welfare work will be found in Table H., page 37.
The Voluntary Workers attached to each centre have again
rendered every possible assistance. They have raised considerable
sums of money, which have been spent mainly on the
provision of massage, convalescent home treatment and dental
treatment. The number of cases assisted are as follows:—

The Fathers' Committee at Brook Road Centre have again
subscribed liberally to the voluntary funds.
Supply of milk.—During the year 144 cases have received
milk free or at less than cost price. The sum so expended
amounted to £48 17s. 8d. In another 17 instances the application
for milk was not granted.
Dental clinic.—In January last the Council adopted a scheme
for the establishment of a dental clinic for mothers and children
attending the Welfare Centres.
The scheme was formulated in co-operation with the
Voluntary Committee at each Centre, the Council undertaking the
provision of dentist, anæethetist, clinic nurse, materials and
ambulance if necessary; the Voluntary Committee undertaking
the provision of dentures, the charges to be:—Complete denture
£3, partial denture £1 15s., and repairs at cost. Charges are
made to the patient of 1s. per attendance for ordinary treatment
and 2s. 6d. for treatment under an anaesthetic; children 6d..per
