Factory and Workshop Act, 1901.— Register of Workshops.—The
number of Workshops on the Register at the end of
1913 was 368. During the year 1914 20 workshops have been
added and 49 taken off the Register, so that at the end of 1914
there were 339 workshops on the Register in Hornsey.
They were as follows:—
Dressmakers 63
Milliners 21
Bootmakers and repairers 58
Cycle makers and repairers 15

Miscellaneous 95
339
837 inspections were made and 39 written notices were served.
The number of sanitary defects discovered and remedied was 92.
As in previous years, want of cleanliness is the most frequent
defect to be dealt with.
In 44 cases, comparing with 46 for the previous year, the
occupier was requested to cleanse, and this was immediately done.
In 27 cases the sanitary accommodation was found to be unsuitable,
insufficient, or defective. These nuisances were, however,
remedied on the owner's or occupier's attention being called
to the matter.
Home Work.— The number of homeworkers on the register
is 44, and 177 inspections of these premises were made during
the year. Lists are sent in twice yearly by employers and the
Sanitary Authorities of other Districts. 238 names were entered
upon these lists, 67 of which were found to refer to other districts,
and which were duly forwarded.
Bakehouses.— There are 34 bakehouses in the Borough,
5 being underground bakehouses.
Frequent inspections have been made of bakehouses, restaurant
kitchens, and other business premises concerned in the preparation
of food, and, speaking generally, the conditions found
were satisfactory.
