The only cause of death shewing any considerable increase is
Diarrhoea, a disease always unusually prevalent among infants
during prolonged hot, dry weather, such as we experienced last
summer. To this cause alone is due the increase in the Infantile
Mortality rate.
Deaths under one year of age of Illegitimate Children.—There
were 28 illegitimate births regisrtered during the
year, and 6 deaths under 1 year of age of illegitimate children
occurred. This gives an infantile mortality among illegitimate
children of 214.
The number of legitimate births registered was 1,451, and
the number of deaths under 1 year of age of legitimate children
was 110. This gives an infantile mortality among legitimate children
of 68.
