Food.
In addition to my many inspections, the total number of recorded
inspections of dairies, milkshops, ice cream premises, market streets, butchers
shops, bakehouses, restaurants, and other food shops, was 2,853. and the
number of notices served was 60. The market streets are inspected daily,
and also on Sundays and after office hours on Saturdays.
Prevalence of and Control over Infectious Diseases.
Excluding the 38 cases of infectious disease of which the notification only
came into force during the year 1919, the total number of notifications
received during the year was 457 in comparison with 502 in the year 1918.

The principal notifications were :

19191918
Diphtheria8879
Scarlet Fever5423
Measles and German Measles181187
Tuberculosis (all forms)94163

Scarlet Fever and Diphtheria were also very prevalent during last year in
London generally. For some reason which has not yet been satisfactorily
explained, the prevalence of Scarlet Fever in London during 1916 to 1918 was
the lowest recorded since 1891
Of the 88 cases of Diphtheria 81 were removed to the London Fever
Hospital or Hospitals of the Metropolitan Asylums Board, the remaining 7
being principally mild cases of bacterological diphtheria which had
recovered by the time the notifications were received.
Of the 54 cases of Scarlet Fever 52 were so removed.
Of the 181 cases of Measles and German Measles only 18 were removed
to Hospitals or the Infirmary.
There were disinfections of 287 rooms and 5,420 articles.
It was ascertained that a large number of Japanese Shaving Brushes
infected with Anthrax had been sold by Holborn Wholesale Merchants to
chemists, etc. in many parts of the United Kingdom and the matter
required much careful attention.
The principal Bacteriological Examinations included 90 suspected cases
Diphtheria of which 44 were positive and 58 suspected cases of Phthisis
of which only 7 were positive.
