5
DEATHS.
The death-rate during the past year in the district has been
18.4 per 1000 of the population. There has been a total of 5286
deaths recorded in the parish, of which 2588 were males and 2698
females. Of the total deaths, 2195 cases occurred in the eastern
and 3091 in the western division of the district.
The death records are singularly uneventful, and contain very
little calling for special or detailed comment. The total number of
deaths this year compares favourably with that of last. Notwithstanding
the increase of population the actual number has been less
by 35.
The number of deaths from measles has been remarkably small,—
indeed the smallest on record since 1861, when the population was
only 155,341. The two diseases which can be in any sense regarded
as epidemic have been scarlatina and whooping cough. Of the
latter, February and March were the fatal months, during which the
number of deaths was unprecedented. It was in the latter half of
the year that the slight rise occurred in the deaths from scarlatina.
