DEATHS.
In 1878, 5,158 deaths were registered in the parish of Islington
Our death rate, therefore, for the year was 19.1 per 1,000.
In 1877, 4,838 deaths were recorded, making our death rate
for that year 18.5 per 1,000, the death rate of London being 21.9
per 1,000.
Of the 5,158 deaths in 1878, 2,551 were males, and 2,607 were
females; 2,059 of the deaths occurred in the western district (of
which number 1,022 were males,) and 3,099 in the eastern, 1,529
being males.
The death rate of Rome was 29.8 per 1,000 in 1878, of Naples
33.1, of Munich 34.6, and of St. Petersburgh 47.1.
The death rate of New York was 24.8 per 1,000 for 1878, of
Philadelphia 18.0, and of Montreal 30.9.
The death rate of Calcutta was 37.7 per 1,000, of Madras 48.0,
and of Alexandria 45.4.
